Jason Logan’s Making Ink: A Forager’s Guide to Natural Inkmaking book is an informative smaller book which engages with basic ink making techniques. Featured with images, it shows how it is not only beautiful, but necessary to work with this kind of process as a human in the world. This book is of relevance to my practice as I am looking deeper into what it means for something to be natural and the materials that can and are associated with this. Logan outlines how it is possible to find such materials, which can then be tested to determine if they can be transformed into rich inks. Having previously begun making my own pigments to be used for drawing, I am looking to expand this repertoire, using more than what I find in my backyard. I am also looking to create pigments that while sensitive to place and time, begin as vibrant, which I will be able to do now knowing what and where to look for in terms of materials.
