Words of Light
Terms:
Perception:the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses.
Articulation:the formation of clear and distinct sounds in speech.
Analogous: comparable in certain respects, typically in a way which makes clearer the nature of the things compared.
3 main points:
- Photography can only translates picture that is already a photograph
- Therefore cannot be an exact reproduction of the world
- Representation of an absent object
- Matter and memory
- principle of articulation among perception, memory, and representation that traces the condition and features these words and concepts
- Perception is a matter of light and representation
- The manipulation of light creates a new perception and effect
- Matter and memory and Object and representation abbreviates history/past
Two interesting things:
- “photographs remember only when seeing and remembering are no longer possible”, what does this mean for photography as a medium for art when presenting it to a public like a show? Must the image include the memory as an aid to be relatable?
- The past is only a reflection of a small illusion of history, why do we still condition ourselves to believe in the past through visual images either paintings, prints or photos?
Pertinent Question:
- Is the reflection or illusion of what a photograph represents such as a matter and memory, is exactly what makes it art and/or interesting to a viewer?
Photograph and Liquid Intelligence
Terms:
Emblematic: serving as a visible symbol for something abstract.
3 main points:
- Anarchism of water
- Water/liquid admitted into the process but excluded due to the nature of its containment and controlled environment
- Dry
- Mechanics/optics
- Technical intelligence
- Liquid intelligence is modern vision that has been deprecated to a great extend from the sense of immersion in the incalculable
Two interesting things:
- Interrelation between liquid intelligence and optical intelligence or technology represents the technology and relationship between creators throughout the development of Photography
- Water in modern digital photography is an archaism to be fear for it represents the possibility of destruction of technology, but It is interesting how water or liquid in older or uncommon practices have a deeper relationship because it represents more than destruction but also development. For example film development always includes liquid even if you are not doing it yourself, there is a present relationship between liquid and incalculability of film.
Pertinent Question:
- Does the development of waterproofing ease the anarchism of water or does the anxiety between water and technology exist due to the possibility of destruction (ex. Incalculable)?
