The Treachery of Images is a 1929 painting by Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. It is also known as Ceci n’est pas une pipe (This is not a pipe). The artwork challenges the convention of identifying an image of an object as the thing itself.
As for my remake, my choice of the spoon as the object is inspired by the plot in The Matrix, where the protagonist Neo faces a wisdom child who uses a spoon to tell him that everything in the Matrix is not real.
The most important step of this remake involves analyzing the colour and the light-and-shadow in the original artwork. First, I discovered that it needs two key lights to create a similar gloss. One top light and one fill light from the top left. Second, the original art piece has a background of light yellow, which is the same colour that appears on the highlight area on the pipe body.
